The magic trick:
A funny concept that suggests larger metaphors
Our narrator is sad when their partner leaves.
Our narrator falls in love with the absence of their partner.
They call that absence “the space.”
It’s funny. It’s a funny concept. But it might be more than that. It holds together thoroughly enough to be extended into larger metaphors and examined for deeper meanings.
And that’s quite a trick on Boucher’s part.

We went our separate ways, but a few hours later I texted David: So what did you think?
Of the movie? he responded. Yeah good.
No of the Space! I wrote. We’re just friends now but I think there might be a real connection here?
